KILN LOG your key to firing success by Teresa Desantis
For perfect firings, time and time again, it is important to keep a "kiln log". A kiln log is a simple notebook in which you keep records of each and every firing you do. This way, you can get easily repeatable results, time and time again. Each firing you do is recorded with the date, time, and temperature of the kiln, and the firing schedule. Witness cone positions can also be recorded at the conclusion of the firing. A kiln log can also be used in conjunction with a digital (or analog) kiln pyrometer, which will allow you to record the time and temperature at various points of the firing. The two most important things to record in your kiln log are the length of firing (total firing time), the highest temperature the kiln reached during the firing (the end point), and witness cone positions. This information is important and valuable and will help you to get easy, repeatable firings, and to make adjustments should overfiring or underfiring conditions occur.
