FLUX & MATTER
Flux and matter are two products in our line that have a variety of uses. Flux is an optional product that may be added to paint to give it a more glossy look. Matter can be added to china paint to give it a more matt look. For a glossier look with china painting: 1. In general if you want glossier paint you should fire your first coat of paint as usual. Then paint on a second coat of your color and fire. With each additional firing there is a tendency for china paint to become more glossy. (You do not necessarily have to add flux to your paint.) 2. OR Mix 5 parts of colored china paint with 1 part flux as second coat. Don’t just paint flux onto a fired paint – your base color may fade. 3. OR you can fire your china paint color hotter (cone 017) (without flux). Fired on flux alone is recommended as a base for gold. Use on small areas – not recommended to use as the gloss base for a complete china doll head) Flux works best if you fire it on first and then fire the color on top of it. Does not work as well if flux is fired on top of a color. Flux needs to go underneath (or mixed in) a paint, not on top. If you apply a coat of flux over an already fired color, it will wash out color. If doing Dimensional Doll Painting (DDP) with many firings you may want to apply the overall wash in your last firing to avoid it coming out too glossy. Firings are cumulative. The thicker the china paint the glossier it will be. For example, if you paint a thin overall wash with a “gloss” china paint, it may appear satin or matt. For more matt china painting: 1. Fire one cone cooler than your normal china paint firing. 2. Add MATTER (sparingly): 6 parts (or more) colored china paint to 1 part MATTER
