CHINA PAINT: ROCHARD Paste and GOLD

1. Mix Rochard Paste gloss or matte china paint with Area Medium or Ultra Fine Line Medium, until the paste makes a string as you pull your pallet knife from it.
2. Use a double-ball stylus to apply the Rochard paste to your porcelain piece. Test the paste by applying a few dots, then wait a minute or two. If the paste stays raised exactly as you placed it - it is fine. If it flattens out or runs, it is too thin and you need to mix in some more dry paste. You can also use a trimmed Accent Liner brush to pull a bead of the paste over your penciled design.
3. If you need to remove some of the Rochard Paste because you are unhappy with the placement, be certain to clean it up completely with cotton covered toothpick dipped into water or with Dolly Dough, as any residue will fire as a shiny spot on the bisque.
4. Use the Rochard Paste gloss china paint to form the white glossy base of a chain necklace, earrings, ring, bracelet or your typical Rochard design on a shoulder plate. If you are using the Rochard Paste matte, you will have a raised surface that is matte (not glossy) after firing.
5. You can also mix the Rochard Paste with any of the lead free colors to have a colored raised paste. This can make beautiful pastels or deeper colors for detail in “jewelry” on your piece.
6. If you are satisfied with your design, fire to cone 017 to 018. It is important to fire the Rochard Paste to a hot china fire. If you do not do this, it will not mature properly and will look bubbled, crazed or very matt.
7. After this first firing, you may leave the Rochard Paste as is, or paint over with Liquid Bright Gold. See instructions below for applying gold to your piece.
8. You can also apply Rochard Paste over a fired decal to give it more of a raised look. If you want to create the colored designs in a decal, you can mix any color of china paint right into the Rochard Paste. Colors fire a shade darker.
9. A gold nugget effect can be achieved by using a sponge to apply the Rochard Paste Gloss. Then after it is fired you can apply the gold with a sponge.
LIQUID BRIGHT GOLD
1. Secure your bottle of Bright Liquid Gold to the glazed tile with a bit of eyewax, as it is small and can easily tip over. To apply the liquid gold, it is essential to use a new brush, never used before for any purpose.
2. A Small Cat’s Tongue, Modern Lip Brush or a trimmed Accent Liner work well. Dip the tip of your brush into the gold and pass the brush over the edge of the bottle to remove excess liquid gold.
3. Paint carefully over the Rochard Paste and any other areas you wish to decorate. Be sure to completely cover the Rochard Paste with the liquid gold so you do not see an edge of bright white showing.
4. A nice even brown color indicates the correct amount of liquid gold coverage. Begin your work on one side and proceed to work your way around to the other side in an organized manner.  You want to avoid going back over an area, as you may get your hands into the wet gold. You can do more than one gold firing, so it may be best to leave the touch-ups and the fine lines for a second gold firing.
5. Remember that anywhere you have gloss Rochard Paste Gloss you will have a bright shiny gold after firing. Anywhere the gold is on the porcelain where there is no Rochard Paste or other shiny surface, you will have a matt look to your gold work. This also is a lovely look and a combination of both shiny and matt gold work looks lovely. If you are using the Rochard Paste Matt, the raised surface will be matt.
6. “Careful” is the watchword in gold work. Gold mistakes are difficult to clean up! If an error has been made, a very small pinch of cotton on a sharp toothpick moistened with a bit of saliva is the best way to remove mistakes. BE SURE to use a fresh toothpick each time so that only the fresh toothpick gets moistened with spit. Clean up completely, as any residue of gold will fire as a purple mark on your bisque. Gold eraser or gold remover can be used to remove these marks after firing, but it is best not to make the mistake in the first place!
7. Gold firing: Fire to 018, propping the kiln lid open 1-2” until the gold odor has disappeared, then close the lid, but leave the peep holes open through out the firing. The fumes from the gold firing are very unpleasant and there also may be some smoke at the beginning of the firing, don’t be alarmed, but be sure to fire in an area that is well ventilated. For the brightest, nicest looking gold it is necessary to allow lots of air to circulate during the firing, therefore the lid must be propped at the start of the firing. If another application of gold is needed, repeat the procedure again. .
